Deflation in Bulgaria for the First Time this year
For the first time in the last two years, the National Statistical Institute reported deflation
According to preliminary data of Bulgaria’s National Statistical Institute (NSI), January 2015 brought a monthly inflation rate of -0.4%.
The annual inflation in January 2015 stood at -1.0%.
The annual average inflation, measured by consumer price index (CPI), in the past 12 months (February 2014 - January 2015) compared to the previous 12 months (February 2013 - January 2014) was -1.3%.
In January 2015, the major monthly prices decreases were observed in the groups of Clothing and footwear (down by 2.9%) and Transport (down by 6.7%).
In January 2015 monthly price increases were registered in the groups of Food and non-alcoholic beverages (up by 0.8%), Alcoholic beverages and tobacco (up by 0.2%), Recreation and culture (up by 0.8%), Restaurants and hotels (up by 0.5%), Education (up by 0.1), and Miscellaneous goods and services (up by 0.1%). There were no monthly price changes in the groups of Communications and Housing (rentals, maintenance and repair), water, electricity, gas and other fuels.
According to preliminary data of the NSI, the harmonized index of consumer prices in January 2015 compared to December 2014 was 99.3%, i.e. the monthly inflation was -0.7%. The annual inflation in January 2015 compared to January 2014 was -2.3%.
In terms of HICP, in January 2015 monthly price increases were observed in the groups of Restaurants and hotels (up by 1.6%), Recreation and culture (up by 0.8%), Food and non-alcoholic beverages (up by 0.7%), Alcoholic beverages and tobacco (up by 0.2%), Education (up by 0.2), and Miscellaneous goods and services (up by 0.1%).
At the same time, monthly price decreases in terms of HICP were registered in the groups of Transport (down by 5.4%) and Clothing and footwear (down by 2.4%). There were no monthly price changes in the groups of Housing (rentals, maintenance and repair), water, electricity, gas and other fuels, Furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house, Health, and Communications.
According to preliminary data of the NSI, the price index of a small basket in January 2015 compared to December 2014 was 100.4%.
As regards the prices of goods and services included in the so-called small basket, i.e. used by the 20% of households with the lowest income, food products registered a monthly increase of 0.9%, non-food products decreased by 0.4% on the month, while prices of services remained unchanged.
