President Rosen Plevneliev has given Bulgaria's biggest party GERB a mandate to form a government.
GERB leader Boyko Borisov was handed the mandate after he and three other representatives of the party carried out consultations with the head of state.
Borisov announced he will either have a cabinet ready or return the mandate within 24 hours.
At the same time Borisov has a seven-day deadline under the Constitution.
Plevneliev said after giving the mandate at Bulgaria's Presidency that the party had declared it proposed Boyko Metodiev Borisov as the next Prime Minister.
The President also announced he was assigning Borisov the task to form a mandate by issuing a special decree on November 5.
Bulgaria's head of state urged stability and functioning institutions to tackle the country's problems and warned such the latter required an elected government.
