The floods in the northwestern Bulgarian town of Mizia have claimed the life of an elderly man.

The man was found dead in his house by his son, an Interior Ministry official who had been dispatched to the flood-stricken area, according to reports of Chief Commissar Nikolay Nikolov, head of the Fire Brigade and Civil Protection Directorate, as cited by bTV.

Nikolov explained that the situation remained critical and the evacuation and search operations in the area were ongoing.

He specified that rescue teams were striving to evacuate 7 people stranded by the floodwaters, adding that the total number of evacuees amounted to over 500.

The northwestern Bulgarian town of Mizia suffered heavy rainfall on Saturday, causing the Skat River to overflow.

The floodwaters caused some 10 houses to collapse.

The local authorities were adamant that no dam walls had been torn and the damage had only been caused by the torrential rain.

Outgoing Environment Minister Stanislav Atanasov suggested that the local authorities had failed to take precautions on the basis of code yellow weather alerts.
