Easter approaches, anticipation builds for one of the most cherished Christian holidays celebrated in Bulgaria
Almost 30 aftershocks have been registered in the northern part of the Aegean Sea after the powerful earthquake which rattled parts of Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey, Saturday.
Most of these were of magnitude 2.5-3.0 on the Richter scale, however some have reached a magnitude of 4.0. The aftershocks occur every 5-10 minutes.
Prof. Nikolay Miloshev of Bulgaria's Academy of Sciences warned that a long series of aftershocks is to be expected.
The epicenter of the earthquake which occurred at around 12.25 pm on May 24 was near the Greek island of Samothrace some 400 km from Sofia. According to various reports, the magnitude of the quake that shook Bulgaria, Greece and western Turkey was between 6.5 - 6.9 on the Richter scale.
At the time of the temblor, another microquake has occurred near Bulgaria's town of Pernik with a magnitude of 2.0 on the Richter scale, however it did not affect the region, Emil Botev, director of Bulgaria's Academy of Sciences National Seismological Center told BNR.
