Bulgarian Travel Abroad Surges: Turkey, Greece, and Romania Top Destinations
In March, there was a significant uptick in Bulgarians traveling abroad, marking a 19.1% increase from the previous year, amounting to 679.1 thousand trips
In June 2013, the number of the trips of Bulgarian residents abroad was 383 000 thousand or by 6.0% above the registered in June 2012.
The data was released Friday by the National Statistics Institute (NSI).
In comparison with the same month of the previous year, an increase was reported in the total number of trips of Bulgarian residents to the following countries: Belgium - by 88.8%, Austria - 40.9%, Serbia - by 25.6%, Germany - by 20.5%, Italy - by 14.6%, and etc. At the same time, a decrease was observed in the total number of the trips of Bulgarian residents to: the Czech Republic - 22.2%, the Netherlands- by 19.1%, Macedonia - by 12.5%, and etc.
In June 2013, the number of arrivals of visitors from abroad in Bulgaria was 1 164.7 thousand, which was by 4.3% above the level of June 2012.
An increase was registered in the visits with holiday and recreation purposes - by 7.1% as well as in the trips with other purposes by 0.8%, while business trips decreased by 2.4%.
The trips with other purposes (as guest, education and visits of cultural and sport events) had the greatest share of the total number of trips of Bulgarian residents abroad - 42.9%, followed by the trips with holiday and recreation purposes - 34.6% and business trips - 22.5%.
In comparison with June 2012, an increase in the trips with other purposes and with holiday and recreation purposes was observed - by 12.8% and by 5.3% respectively, while a 3.9% decrease was registered in business trips.
In June 2013, the trips with other purposes formed 61.5% of all trips to Serbia, 60.0% - to the Russian Federation, 52.8% - to the United Kingdom and 52.7% - to Poland.
Business trips had the highest share in trips to Belgium and Germany - 61.6 and 43.8% respectively.
The trips with holiday and recreation purpose to Greece were 52.1%, and to Turkey - 38.2% of all trips of Bulgarian residents to these countries.
In June 2013, the number of arrivals of visitors from abroad to Bulgaria was 1 164.7 thousand which was by 4.3% above the level of June 2012.
An increase was registered in the visits with holiday and recreation purposes - by 7.1% as well as in the trips with other purposes by 0.8%, while business trips decreased by 2.4%.
The visits of citizens of European Union had the greatest relative share in the total number of foreigners visiting Bulgaria - 55.1%. In comparison with the same month of the previous year they increased by 0.9%.
Larger increases were registered in the visits of citizens of the Czech Republic - by 29.7%, Germany - by 24.2% and Austria - by 14.4%. At the same time a drop was observed in the visits of citizens of Poland - by 18.1%, Hungary - by 14.8%, the United Kingdom - by 9.6%, and etc.
The visits of foreigners in the group "Other European countries" increased by 8.1% as the highest growth was observed in the visits of citizens from the Ukraine and the Russian Federation - by 16.4 and by 13.6% respectively.
In June 2013, the share of the visits with holiday and recreation purpose was the highest - 62.0% followed by these with other purposes (including as guest and passing transit) - 28.6% and with professional purpose - 9.4%.
The visits with holiday and recreation purpose formed 83.9% of the arrivals from the Russian Federation, 83.1% - from the United Kingdom, 78.5% - from the Ukraine, 76.9% - from Macedonia, 74.2% - from Germany and 73.3% from the Czech Republic.
The visits with professional purpose were 35.7% of all arrivals from Belgium, while 73.6% of the arrivals from Turkey were with other purpose.
