Bulgaria's Stiliyan Petrov to Join Aston Villa for Pre-season Training
Bulgarian midfielder Stiliyan Petrov will join the first team of Aston Villa in its pre-season training.
Aston Villa’s Bulgarian captain Stiliyan Petrov, who confirmed his retirement from football on Thursday, may join the team’s backroom staff.
Aston Villa manager manager Paul Lambert has confirmed he is hoping to persuade Petrov for a possible new role at the club.
"There is something in my head I would like to speak to him about regarding coaching," Lambert said, as cited by British media.
"I am not sure whether that would be on a full-time or a part-time basis. The door is always open to him here and that has nothing to do with sentimental reasons."
Petrov announced Thursday that he is quitting professional football as he continues his fight against leukemia. Petrov is now in remission after being diagnosed with the illness in March last year.
"The most important thing is that he has survived that horrible disease," Lambert said. "You cannot imagine what people with that illness go through. I am delighted first and foremost that he is alive.
