EU Nations Consider Recognizing Palestinian Statehood
Spain, Ireland, and other EU nations are intending to acknowledge Palestine's statehood on May 21, as stated by Josep Borrell, the EU's top diplomat for foreign and security policy
Bulgaria's Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov has argued during Tuesday's parliamentary debates on a no confidence vote of the Borisov Cabinet that last week's devastatingly critical EC monitoring report on Bulgaria had registered progress.
"The report of the European Commission has also registered good results," he stated in Parliament regarding the 5th annual report of the EC monitoring Bulgaria's post-EU accession progress in problem areas such as corruption, organized crime, and rule of law under the so called Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM).
Tsvetanov, who is a Deputy PM and a key figure in the government of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and the ruling center-right GERB party, alluded that the CVM was introduced by the EU in 2007 for Bulgaria as a result of "the efforts" of the previous governments.
"It was clear for everyone that we don't know how many years this Cooperation and Verification Mechanism will be in force. If you were true politicians, I think you would have received a better assessment for the work you did. To your great regret, some good results have been registered at the end of the five-year period," Tsvetanov declared, addressing the leftist and rightist opposition, and the fact that the July 2012 EC report covered the entire 5-year period since Bulgaria's EU accession.
During Tuesday's parliamentary debates on the no confidence vote for the Borisov Cabinet initiated by the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party and the ethnic Turkish party DPS, Tsvetanov also commented on Bulgaria's failure to join the Schengen Agreement because of a Dutch veto and general opposition by other Western EU nations. He stressed the numerous technical inspections on the Bulgarian border that is supposed to be become an external Schengen border, and the support that the European Parliament has lent to Bulgaria's Schengen bid.
Bulgaria's Interior Minister is convinced that the Borisov Cabinet has carried out 100% of the legislative and structural reforms that "had to be completed", putting the blame for any failures on the opposition which was part of the Stanishev Cabinet of the three-way coalition in 2005-2009.
