The government dismissed on Thursday 23 of the 28 governors of districts in Bulgaria and appointed their replacements. `All these positions have a political mandate`, Minister of State Administration Dimitar Kalchev explained. He added that `it is no yellow broom, referring to the colour chosen by the ruling Simeon II National Movement as its symbol. `On the very first day of the new government, nearly all district governors resigned`, Kalchev said. Only five of the previous governors kept their office-in Sofia, Plovdiv, Pleven, Kyustendil and Pazardzhik. Under the Thursday decision of the government, all governors are replaced by a deputy who sits in for his former superior until somebody is appointed on a permanent position. In the above-mentioned five districts there was no deputy district governors so the governors will remain for another couple of weeks till new ones are appointed. At the next meeting of the government or the one after it, the chiefs of the Privatisation Agency, the Agency for Energy and Energy Resources and the Committee for Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy will be replaced as well. The government also decided that Finance Minister Milen Velchev will represent the country before all international financial institutions and will sign documents with them.
