Putin Replaced Shoigu
According to a report from TASS, Russian President Vladimir Putin is making a change in leadership by replacing Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu
Bulgaria's new Defense Minister, Nikolay Mladenov, said Friday his main job would be restore the institution's focus on defense affairs.
"The main goal of my team is to return the focus of the Ministry of Defense on its essential activities - the armed forces and the protection of the national security of Bulgaria... In the recent years, the army has lost its combat capacity, and this priority has been neglected over the economic activities - social benefits, property deals, and defense contracts", Mladenov declared.
The Minister also said his institution had a "leaking budget that does not correspond to the actual needs of Bulgaria's defense".
Mladenov has been assured by the Prime Minister Borisov and the Finance Minister Djankov that the salaries of the Bulgarian Army officers and soldiers would not be cut over the crisis, and that the money for the Bulgarian military missions abroad would not be reduced.
The Minister announced the names of his Deputies - reservist Lieutenant-General Anyu Angelov, and Valentin Radev. Valeri Ratchev, Bulgaria's Ambassador to Iraq, will be the head of Mladenov's cabinet. (Novinite.com's interview with Ratchev is available HERE)
Minister Mladenov believes that the main threat for Bulgaria's national security is the international terrorism coming from Afghanistan and Pakistan. He noted that the relations between Serbia and Kosovo had started to show signs of normalization in the recent months.
