Bulgarian boxer Kubrat Pulev claimed the vacant European heavyweight title after defeating Dereck Chisora from the UK at the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg on Saturday.

The winner was determined with a split decision after twelve rounds. The judges scored 118-110 and 116-112 for Pulev and 115-113 for Chisora.

Thus the Bulgarian recorded his 23rd victory in 24 professional matches, having suffered his only defeat to Wladimir Klitschko in November 2014.

Pulev dominated the most of the match, winning nearly every round. The bout was preceded by verbal and physical confrontation between the two boxers, with tensions running high right up to the encounter.

The Bulgarian moved a step closer to facing the holder of the IBF heavyweight title Anthony Joshua.
