Council of Europe (CoE) Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland announced that a Greek referendum would fall short of international standards if held as planned on Sunday.

According to international standards, a referendum should be held with at least two weeks' notice to allow sufficient time for discussion and international observers to organise the monitoring of the vote.

Furthermore, the question, which is to feature on the referendum is not very clear, daily Kathimerini quotes Jagland as having said in an interview for Associated Press.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced the holding of a referendum on whether the country should accept the demands of the international creditors in exchange for further bailout.

It is feared that a “no” vote in the referendum, which has been promoted by the government, would result in Greece having to leave the eurozone.
