Some 8,000 spectators flocked Saturday to an air show staged by the Bulgarian Air Force on occasion on its centennary.

The show at the Graf Ignatievo Air Base in southern Bulgaria featured the country's top MiG-29 and Mig-21 fighter jets.

The event was scheduled to coincide with the centennary of the First Balkan War, 1912-1913.

During the Battle of Edirne that started in November 1912, the Bulgarian Army made one of the first known uses of airplanes for warfare purposes.

Saturday Bulgarian Air Force commander Gen Simeon Simeonov stated that in spite of financial hardships, there is no outflow of personnel from the air force.

He added that he hopes that in the very near future the Bulgarian Army will secure the commissioning of a new multipurpose fighter jet for its use.
