Even though Romanian President Traian Basescu survived an impeachment referendum, he has now lost his legitimacy, according to his political rival, Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

Ponta has pointed out that millions of voters had voted for Basescu's impeachment.

Basescu survived Sunday's referendum on his impeachment thanks to the low voter turnout. As polls closed, preliminary figures indicated turnout was less than the 50% required to make the result invalid.

However, official results showed that 87.55% of those who took part in Sunday's referendum had voted in favor of his removal from office.

"What can we do? We must defend Romanians who voted for the impeachment," Ponta has stated, according to international media.

"We will try to reduce the prejudice created among the Romanians by the presence of Basescu and the profiteers around him."
