Young Bulgarian Mother Dumps Baby in Brussels Canal

Crime | March 18, 2012, Sunday // 15:18

A young Bulgarian woman has been detained in Belgium's capital Brussels on suspicions she has dumped her newborn baby in a local canal.

According to reports by Belgian newspaper Derniere Heure, the 24-year-old woman has confessed she dropped her baby, aged 5 days, in the water.

The paper writes that police have detained the Bulgarian after on March 8 they received a signal from the hospital, in which she bore her child, after she disappeared together with her baby.

At this stage, police have no conclusive proofs that the baby has been dumped, apart from it being missing, and the confessions of its mother, which however are said to be contradictory.

Divers have been attempting to recover the body of the baby from the canal, linking Brussels and Charleroi, but as yet to no avail.

News sources speculate that the 24-year-old Bulgarian travelled to Belgium to have an abortion, which was however not feasible given the advanced stage of pregnancy.
