The Sliven Regional Court left behind bars Stefan Petrov Stefanov, the man, who attempted to rob a bank in the Bulgarian city of Sliven.
The Prosecutor in the case is the Chief Sliven Prosecutor, Plamen Stefanov, while the judge is the Chair of the Regional Court, Kancho Zhekov.
The Prosecutor's Office submitted charges on 3 counts – large-scale attempted robbery and attempted homicide, taking hostages, and illegal possession of ammunitions. Stefanov is facing 15 years to life behind bars for the first count; up to 8 years for the second and the third.
The defense council was Borislav Syarov, a court-appointed attorney, known in Sliven for working on criminal cases. Syarov requested bail or house arrest for his client on the grounds he has no criminal record, and presented documentation he had a permit to carry a handgun.
The rule can be appealed within a 3-day deadline before the Appellate Court in the Black Sea city of Burgas.
Om March 23, Stefanov, 27, busted in the local branch of Investbank in Sliven, and shot and seriously wounded one of the security guards. The assailant took the six bank employees hostages and gradually released them with the last one being held for over 18 hours. He surrendered to the police 39 hours after the beginning of the ordeal.
Doctors from the Military Medical Academy in Sofia informed Monday the security guard, Stancho Stanev, 42, is still in critical condition, in an artificial coma and on life support.
Meanwhile, people from Stefanov's native village of Korten, near the town of Nova Zagora, have started collecting signatures in protection of the failed bank robber. They are considering establishing an initiative committee for his defense.
