The energy value and the amounts of fiber, sugar and salt, announced on the packaging of popular Bulgarian brands of diet bread do not correspond to the actual content of the products, tests showed.

The tests were conducted by the Bulgarian National Consumers Association, which is an independent non-governmental organization for protection of consumer interests.

Twelve Bulgarian brands of diet bread were tests in the laboratories of SGS Bulgaria in the Black Sea city of Varna.

According to the results, the energy values announced on the labels of the breads were lower than the actual content.

The NGO has announced that the important factor for diets is not the energy value, but rather the fiber content.

However, the tests have proven that there is a lower amount of fibers not only than the announced amount on the labels, but also compared to the European average.

The Bulgarian breads have showed an average of 1,02 grams of fibers per 100 grams. In comparison, the amount in a bread produced in the Netherlands has an average of 5,1 grams of fibers per 100 grams, or five times more than the average in Bulgaria.

The tests have also showed that the largest amount of sugars could be found in breads, which are named for diabetics.
