A 53-year-old Bulgarian man was sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison in Omaha for transporting 18 kilos of cocaine discovered in a stop on Interstate 80, local media reported.

Dimitar Trancheff was sentenced Monday by US District Judge Laurie Smith Camp to 188 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.

A Nebraska State Patrol trooper stopped Trancheff on April 9, 2005, on I-80 in Lincoln County. Troopers searched his vehicle and found 18 kilograms of cocaine.

Three weeks later, he was given pre-trial release. He absconded, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

In August, Trancheff was arrested in Bulgaria, and US Marshals brought him back to Nebraska in November. A jury convicted him after a two-day trial in February of possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
