Bulgaria’s caretaker Foreign Minister Nadezhda Neynsky said the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran brought a sense of relief after weeks of escalating tensions in the Middle East, describing it as a moment welcomed by all who hope for an end to the conflict. Speaking to BNT, she stressed that the durability of the ceasefire remains uncertain and will be determined primarily by Iran’s actions in the coming days.

Neynsky outlined a series of conditions she believes are essential for maintaining the ceasefire, including Tehran’s abandonment of any effort to develop nuclear weapons and the provision of verifiable guarantees that enriched uranium will not be diverted for military purposes. She also pointed to the need for Iran to halt attacks on Gulf states and to ensure the reopening and safe operation of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route that has been central to the current crisis.

She further argued that recent developments at the United Nations highlight how interconnected global security challenges have become. Referring to a rejected UN Security Council resolution calling for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Neynsky said the episode illustrates the complexity of managing overlapping international crises and competing geopolitical interests. In her view, European institutions are currently playing a key role in identifying workable approaches to the conflict involving Iran.

The foreign minister also emphasized Bulgaria’s security posture, stating that “all efforts of the Bulgarian government are aimed at providing maximum security guarantees for Bulgaria.” She added that these guarantees are rooted in the country’s strategic alignment with the European Union and NATO, which she described as the main pillars of Bulgaria’s foreign and security policy framework.
