Fares for the Bucharest metro system are set to increase by 40 percent starting May 1, according to a draft regulation published by Romania’s Ministry of Transport and reported by Agerpres.

Under the new pricing structure, a single journey will rise from 5 to 7 lei (approximately €0.98 to €1.37). A two-trip ticket will increase from 10 to 14 lei, while a 10-trip pass will go up from 40 to 55 lei. All categories reflect a significant adjustment in travel costs for daily commuters and occasional passengers in Bucharest.

Time-based passes are also affected. A 24-hour ticket will climb from 12 to 18 lei, a weekly pass from 45 to 60 lei, and a monthly subscription from 100 to 140 lei. Longer-term options will see even sharper increases, with a six-month pass rising from 500 to 700 lei and an annual subscription moving from 900 to 1,300 lei.

This latest revision follows a previous fare hike introduced in January 2025, when the cost of a single trip increased from 3 to 5 lei. At that time, multi-ride tickets and subscription packages were also adjusted upward, marking a broader trend of rising public transport costs in the capital.

The upcoming increase reflects continued adjustments in pricing policy for urban transport services, affecting both residents and visitors who rely on the metro as a primary mode of travel across the city.
