Bulgaria: President Yotova Urges Bulgaria to Promote Itself as Safe Destination to Save Tourist Season President Iliana Yotova

President Iliana Yotova has called for Bulgaria to be actively promoted as a safe and competitively priced destination in order to secure a strong tourist season, during a meeting with caretaker Tourism Minister Irena Georgieva. The discussion was part of a broader series of consultations initiated by Yotova on how to mitigate the economic impact of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

Georgieva briefed the vice president on the current state of the tourism sector, outlining both the risks facing the upcoming season and the measures being prepared by the ministry. She said an economic support package is expected to be submitted to the Council of Ministers within two weeks. According to the minister, talks with industry representatives indicate readiness to keep prices for already booked summer packages unchanged, provided there is no sharp increase in fuel and electricity costs.

Yotova stressed that businesses in the sector require support due to rising energy prices and warned against transferring these costs to tourists through higher service prices. She pointed out that Bulgaria could benefit from a shift in travel preferences, as some tourists avoid destinations closer to the Middle East conflict, and said this creates an opportunity for targeted promotion of the country as a secure alternative. At the same time, she cautioned against political rhetoric that could fuel public anxiety and damage Bulgaria’s image as a safe place to visit.

The minister also highlighted that concerns about travel in the Middle East are already redirecting part of the European tourist flow toward countries like Spain and Portugal, but noted that Bulgaria could position itself competitively if it strengthens its presence in key markets and focuses on travelers who remain willing to travel. Efforts will also be directed at improving international visibility and attracting tourists through more active advertising campaigns.

Additional topics discussed during the meeting included the possibility of introducing tourist vouchers for vulnerable groups as part of the upcoming 2026 state budget, a measure that could support both consumers and the industry if properly regulated. The two also reviewed options for increasing charter flights, ensuring the safety of tourist attractions, and improving beach management.

Georgieva further noted that proposals such as a reduced VAT rate for the sector are being discussed with industry representatives but would require legislative action by a functioning parliament. She described such a step as a potential tool to support businesses, preserve employment, and encourage investment, provided there is broad political and public backing.
