Gibraltar to Join Schengen from July 2026
Gibraltar is set to be integrated into the Schengen system for land crossings starting July 15, following an agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom regarding the territory’s future arrangements. The measure is expected to be applied on a provisional basis from that date.
The decision follows approval by the permanent representatives of EU member states, who endorsed the text of the agreement along with the relevant decisions for its signature and temporary implementation. Final formal adoption will take place once legal-linguistic verification procedures within the Council of the European Union are completed.
Gibraltar, a British overseas territory, was not included in the 2020 EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, leaving its border regime outside that framework until now.
The purpose of the new arrangement is to eliminate physical obstacles to the movement of people and goods between Gibraltar and Spain, while at the same time preserving the integrity of the Schengen Area, the EU single market, and the Customs Union.
