The prolonged winter period has caused a mortality rate of 25-25% among bee families, while in some regions the losses amount to over 40%, according to Gancho Ganchev, head of the National Beekeepers' Union.
Ganchev presented preliminary statistics at a Thursday press conference within the BeeMania expo taking place in the northeastern city of Dobrich.
He specified that the final data would be available on April 15.
Ganchev reminded that beekeepers continued to suffer losses due to the agro-chemicals used by farmers.
According to statistics presented by Ganchev, as cited by news portal dnevnik.bg, chemicals killed 3% more bees in 2011 as compared to 2010.
The Chair of the National Beekeepers' Union stated that Bulgaria had exported over 6.8 thousand tons of honey in 2011 (compared to 8.5 thousand tons in 2010) and had closed the year at a profit of over EUR 19 M.
