Estonian Hostages Freed, Attacker Dead

The hostages held at the Estonian Ministry of Defense have been liberated, and the violent attacker has committed suicide, report local sources.

No one has been hurt during the operation, although at least one was reported wounded during an explosion and shooting that preceded the hostage-taking.

A man was reported to be holding security officers as hostages at the Ministry of Defense building in Tallinn, shortly after and explosion and shots were heard there Thursday afternoon.

The building was immediately surrounded by police. The attacker is believed to be a former Estonian military officer.

Analysts have commented that he might have been among those affected by recent reductions in the number of Estonian military.
