Commissar Dimitar Georgiev has been appointed as a new Deputy Interior Minister by the Bulgarian government after his predecessor had to quit for having a background in the communist-era services.
Georgiev, the acting director of the International Police Cooperation Directorate of the Interior, was appointed Monday by PM Boyko Borisov.
He has worked for the Interior Ministry since 1993, when he started out as an inspector. He was appointed the head of the international cooperation department.
Since 2006, Georgiev has been Bulgaria's representative in the governing board of Europol and the General Assembly of Interpol. In the past few years, he has been working to create and solidify Bulgaria's National SIRENE Bureau (Supplementary Information Request at the National Entry), which is a system for exchange of additional or supplementary information on alerts between the Schengen States.
According to the Interior Ministry, he has been in charge of the training of 30 000 officers in toal from the Interior, the Customs Agency, the State National Security Agency, and the Military Police for work with the Schengen Information System.
Georgiev was born in 1968 in Sofia; he has degrees in engineering and accounting plus a specialization at the Interior Ministry Academy and foreign institutions.
He is taking over the position of Pavlin Dimitrov who had to quit the Interior because of having worked for DS, the State Security service of the former communist regime.
