Two towns in Central Bulgaria - Karlovo and Banya - are holding Sunday an experimental vote, which mirrors the coming elections in the USA as the voters choose between John McCain and Barack Obama.
The experimental elections are organized at the initiative of the US Embassy in Sofia, and will last from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Each of the towns has one election station with 400 pieces of color ballot paper with the pictures and biographical data of the two candidates.
Both Obama and McCain have election headquarters. Obama's staff is headed by the Director of the Supervisory Council of the Banya Winery Branimir Botev, whereas McCain's supporters are led by the Chair of Karlovo's Municipal Council Toshko Stoev.
The fake elections will not stick 100% to the general election rules as the two headquarters are allowed to hand out advertising materials.
Twenty residents of Karlovo voted in the "local US elections" during the first half an hour after the polls opened.
It has not been decided yet whether the US Embassy in Sofia is going to send the results from the Karlovo/Banya elections to the two candidates for the US Presidency. The next US President of Karlovo and Banya will be announced officially on Monday.
Both Karlovo and Banya are located in the Karlovo Municipaly, Plovdiv District. The town of Banya has a population of 3 600. Karlovo has a population of 26 000, and is famous for being the birthplace of the Bulgarian national hero Vasil Levski.
