As Hurricane Ike steams toward the Texas coast US authorities have warned 1 million people to flee inland.

The storm, which made a destructive trip across the Caribbean, is expected to hit land Saturday, with some forecasts predicting winds of more than 200km/h.

The state's coastal areas are home to the US largest collection of refineries and chemical plants, as Texas has a quarter of the nation's refining capacity, the Los Angeles Times points out.

Ike has already battered Haiti and Cuba, toppling buildings in Havana and forcing an estimated 2.5 million people to flee.
