Chair of Arkansas Democratic Party Dies of Gun Shot Wounds

The Chairman of Arkansas Democratic Party Bill Gwatney, 48, died of his wounds hours after he was shot at by a gunman, who burst into the party's headquarters in Little Rock, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

The man shot the former state senator several times in the upper body late on Wednesday, before fleeing in his vehicle and leading officers on a long chase.

The suspect, idntified as 50-year-old Timothy Johnson of the town of Searcy, was killed in a shoot-out with police.

Former President Bill Clinton, a past Arkansas governor, and New York Senator Hillary Clinton said they were "deeply saddened" by the fatal shooting.

"His leadership and commitment to Arkansas and this country have always inspired us and those who had the opportunity to know him," their joint statement read.

Moments after shooting Gwatney, the killer pointed a handgun at a worker at the nearby Arkansas Baptist headquarters and said "I lost my job," a church official reported.

Gwatney was a superdelegate who backed Hillary Clinton for the presidency and endorsed Barack Obama when she dropped out.

He is listed as the chief executive officer of Harold Gwatney Chevrolet Co. car dealership in the 2008 Marquis Who's Who and was a state senator from 1993 to 2002.
