Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic is in UN custody in The Hague following his overnight extradition from Belgrade, a UN spokesman said.

Karadzic was captured last week after more than a decade in hiding and had been jailed in Belgrade while the Serbian war crimes court awaited a mailed appeal challenging his transfer.

As no legal papers arrived by Tuesday evening, the Serbian justice ministry issued a decree that allowed Karadzic's handover to the Netherlands.

Karadzic faces 11 counts including genocide, extermination and persecution.

The former president of the Republic of Srpska is accused of authorizing the shooting of civilians during the 43-month siege of Sarajevo and orchestrating the slaughter of some 8,000 Muslim men in the Eastern Bosnian town of Srebernica during the Bosnia war.

Hours before Karadzic's extradition, Serbian utranationalists protested his arrest on the streets of Belgrade.

As violence erupted, police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, cutting the rally short.
