France Celebrates National Holiday

World | July 14, 2008, Monday // 00:00

Today is July 14th - France's national holiday, commonly known in English as Bastille Day.

The Bastille was a prison in Paris, formally named Bastille Saint-Antoine, Number 232, Rue Saint-Antoine. The prison is best known today because of the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, which along with the Tennis Court Oath is considered the beginning of the French Revolution. The event was commemorated one year later by the FГЄte de la FГ©dГ©ration.

To mark the occasion a parade will be held on the Champs Elysees (the Elysian Fields) and La Place de la Concorde (The Square of Consent). Over 60 helicopters and airplanes are going to participate in the parade, including "MiG" airplanes belonging to the newest European Union member countries.

The French President Nicolas Sarkozy, however, had made significant changes in this year's ceremony. For the first time in history the parade is going to be open by the United Nation's "Blue Berets".

Also for the first time the 43 Heads of State, who participated Sunday in the Mediterranean Forum, will be present at the parade. Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov and Bulgaria's First Lady Zorka Parvanova are among the parade's guests as well. Other guest include to United Nation's General Secretary Ban Ki-moon.
