Unidentified gunmen opened fire on security guards outside the US Consulate in Istanbul Wednesday and at least three officers were killed, Turkish authorities said.
Three of the attackers were also killed in the shootout, the Anatolian news agency reported.
US officials said no employees at the consulate were killed or injured. The police has cordoned off the area.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. It was the first on a diplomatic mission in the city since 2003 when 62 people were killed in assaults on the British consulate, a bank and two synagogues.
