China executed at least 2,468 people last year, accounting for more than 80 percent of people put to death worldwide, according to a report published on the Web site of Amnesty International. Amnesty said 90 percent of the 3,048 executions last year took place in four countries: China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the U.S. The report said the actual number may be much higher ``because many countries deliberately keep the true numbers of those executed secret, belying the supposed deterrent value of the death penalty.''
