The parents of the missing UK girl Madeleine McCann are "entirely innocent" and played no role in her disappearance, a spokesman for the family said at a televised news conference outside the family's home on Tuesday, Bloomberg reported.
"Gerry and Kate are innocent victims of a heinous crime," the aide Clarence Mitchell added.
The parents have been officially named as suspects about ten days ago by Portuguese police investigating the case of Madeleine's disappearance.
To suggest that the McCanns had anything to do with their daughter going missing was as "ludicrous as it is nonsensical,'' Mitchell told reporters.
In spite of the accusations, the police did not ban the McCanns from leaving the country and they travelled back to England on September 9, returning to their home with their 2-year-old twins, Sean and Amelie.
The four-year-old victim vanished from the apartment room at the Portuguese Praia da Luz resort on 3 May while her parents were eating with friends at a nearby restaurant.
The family maintains Madeleine was abducted and has campaigned internationally to secure the safe return of their daughter, including having a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI and securing support from football star David Beckham.
