SOCIALISTS DEMAND FINANCE MINISTER TO LEAVE OFFICE

Politics | March 27, 2002, Wednesday // 00:00

Leftist “Coalition for Bulgaria” demanded the resignation of Bulgaria’s Finance Minister Milen Velchev. That happened after parliamentary speaker Ognyan Gerdzhikov did not move for voting the proposal of “Coalition for Bulgaria” to invite the prime minister in Parliament to discuss the controversial contract with Britain’s company Crown Agents. In a justification of his decision parliamentary speaker Gerdzhikov said that the Parliament has voted it last week and overruled it. Bulgaria’s rightist parliamentary opposition the United Democratic Forces walked out of the plenary hall after Gerdzhikov announced that the proposal did not need to be moved. Scandal over the contract shook the country last week when a series of transcripts from closed governmental meetings were published in Bulgaria’s daily Trud. The shorthand reports showed that the cabinet was deliberately looking for ways to bypass the Public Procurement Act, which is normally applied for all government contracts.
