Youth is life, ambition is the drive. Bulgaria's capital Sofia, in every respect, has the potential to grow and change. Because this city, unlike many other of the country's, has the priceless property of being the focus of young people's ambitions. From absent-minded visionaries to career-minded pragmatics, from charming ignoramuses to young professionals - you can meet them all on the streets, in the cafeterias and in the office buildings of Sofia.

It has been a long time since its own natives had a noteworthy numerical superiority over newcomers. Today, you can see youngsters from all across the country in Sofia, as well as students from different parts of Europe and the rest of the world. They fill cafes and nightclubs since the places are ready to burst, aspire for leading positions in local companies or just become waiters and waitresses or sell pizzas in small pavilions along the streets; universities never run out of alumni.

The opportunity to study at a prestigious university is one of the most powerful magnets for school leavers indeed, with the Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski, the University for National and World Economy and the New Bulgarian University topping the ranking of the most desired higher education institutions. It is not rare for a teenager to eye some university just for the sake of being a student, even without having special affinities for science-related activities. But to be part of a students' community, and to hold a university diploma afterwards is something very few would refuse. Especially in case we are talking about the universities of Sofia. Some things are considered more impressive just for the fact of their belonging to this city.

Some drop out of campus before graduation. Nevertheless, most of them are all set to find a way and stay in the city. One of the most popular ways for newly setting-in teenagers to provide for themselves is to become bartenders or shop assistants, and many girls say they make good money by working as waitresses or dancers at some of the most popular nightclubs. As time passes, some push their way up, others only care about keeping whatever job there is... and, yes - stay in Sofia.

What is probably most important is that, as the city's business environment has been cultivating, a new class of skilled, motivated and dynamic young people with modern views and a taste for self-improvement and professional growth. For them, hard work and perfectionism are not mere lip service. If two decades ago there has been only a handful of such specimen, now they form an observable section on Sofia's population map. More and more local firms, as well as regional offices of foreign corporations, make use of young specialists' potential, and more and more young people break their trail to the heights of firms' hierarchy.

Still, let us not forget these are young people, willing to get together and have some fun! No doubt Sofia is the right place. In no other Bulgarian city there are some many nightclubs, cafes and restaurants, each with its own, unique atmosphere and music selection. There are Oriental-style places where the popular "chalga", a mixture of folklore, disco and sounds from the Far East, is played. There are also more "sophisticated" venues, as well as rock clubs, places for teenagers and for high-hat guys, pounding-music discos or clubs with totally relaxing atmosphere.

People you can meet there are twice more checkered. Models and their macho boyfriends, yuppies, pop starts or just weird guys with their hair dyed in green and purple, wearing their razorblades on a necklace...

Yet they are somehow alike: bearing the strength to keep changing themselves and the colorful city they live in.
