Two of the obligatory matriculation exams to stay – the Bulgarian language and literature exam and an exam, depending on the profile of the school –and the third matriculation exam on civil education to be removed is the last proposal of the Education Ministry concerning the amendments in the Education Act. That was announced by the spokesman of the Ministry Vladimir Dikov. The proposal reads that there will be a third matriculation exam that will be on voluntary basis – the pupils will decide whether it is necessary to take this exam, which aims to assist the pupils in their preparation for university. Currently, the obligatory matriculation exams are three under the Education Act – on Bulgarian language and literature; civil education and one on subject, selected by the pupil. Hundreds of pupils protested on February 24 against the obligatory matriculation exams that are to be introduced in 2003. Students from the Bulgarian cities Sofia,Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Veliko Turnovo, Pazardzhik and other towns protested against the decree of the Government on the issue. More than 5,000 signatures against the matriculation exams were gathered in Sofia by noon. “We envisage to organize a national meeting with a lot of pupils. The minister did not attend since he was invited too late and already he had other plans. The demands of the children are normal. It is nice that they are not indifferent to their future and they are trying to help the solving of that problem, “ Vladimir Dikov, spokesman of the Education Ministry commented.
