The seminar “Canada- an emerging trading partner for Bulgaria” aims to show the Bulgarian business community and government that Canada is ready to become a credible investor, Mr. Luc Dupont, Regional Manager for Turkey and South Europe at Export Development Canada, said in an exclusive interview for novinite.com, following the Canadian-Bulgarian business forum, February 5. Canadian officials and businessmen vowed to support Bulgaria’s bid for EU entry, underlining its business benefits. H.E. Raphael Girard, Canadian Ambassador to Bulgaria, pointed out Bulgaria’s importance for regional stability. Discussing ways of attracting Canadian investments, Deputy Prime Minister Nikolay Vassilev said that the Cabinet’s policy of active debt management and significant lowering of direct taxation is an adequate answer to foreign investors’ interests. Bulgaria was described as a stable, predictable and peaceful country, which could make Canadian investors become more active. Direct Canadian investments for January-September 2001 stood at USD 800,000, mainly in the manufacturing, software, tourism and trade sector, trade balance is negative. The Canadian businessmen pointed good infrastructure, strong local partner plus international credible partner as major prerequisites for investments. They confirmed their interest in Bulgaria’s energy sector, aviation, local posts and Health Care system.
