Dog's Dinner

A very attractive young lady is walking her dog in the park. A gentleman notices her and decides to take a chance. He comes near her and asks, "Excuse me, Miss, does your dog allow fine young men to approach you?"

"But of course," she replies, "how else is he supposed to bite them!"

Jokes apart, during the last couple of years Bulgaria's capital Sofia has witnessed the grim consequences of stray dogs going berserk and biting people in the streets. So, finally, the Municipal Council has decided to somehow overcome the issue by taking count of the homeless canines.

Apart from providing us with the number of 16 200 stray Sofia dogs (a remarkable number it is, indeed), I don't see how this helps solve the mystery of providing a bite free life for the capital's residents.

True, it was announced that emerging with a clear picture of how numerous the four pawed scavengers are is only the first step towards resolving the problem.

However, if I am not mistaken, no further steps were named.

As I am an animal lover (though not as fervent as French actress Bridget Bardot), I tend to get a tiny bit suspicious when such a vague design for dealing with animal issues emerges.

This is not to say that I distrust Sofia Municipality. I do trust them, partially.

Yet, how about taking count of, just to name a few, homeless people, beggars, unresolved petty crime, broken lampposts and street holes?

Wouldn't that be a nice first step towards improving the lives of Sofia residents, I wonder. Because what Sofia resembles right now ain't nothing but a dog's dinner.
