Army Deserters Take Hostages near Moscow

Two Russian army soldiers deserted their unit Thursday, killed two police officers and seized two female hostages in Moscow region, officials say.

The soldiers fled their garrison near Moscow after seizing Kalashnikov rifles and ammunition.

They killed two police officers who tried to stop them, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement released to the media.

They are holed up with the hostages in an apartment building.

A special-purpose police have launched an operation to neutralise the hostage-takers.
