Bulgarian archaeologists unearthed the oldest church in the Bulgaria Rhodopes Mountain near the grandiose religious center Perperikon.
The ancient temple was built in 393-398 and is believed to be one of the oldest Christian centers in Europe. Archaeologists are positive that it was the center that launched the Christianizing of the Rhodopes.
A door to Perperikon's citadel constructed was also disclosed during the excavation works.
Earlier this summer excavations proved that the grandiose religious center Perperikon was built some 3,500 years ago. In ancient Greek history the Perperikon sanctuary has been as important as that of Apollo at Delphi.
