Movie star Marlon Brando, who reaped worldwide fame with his searing role in the film "On the Waterfront", has died at the age of 80 in L.A.

Regarded as one of the pivotal actors of the post-war period, Marlon Brando, tarred in more than 40 screen movies, including 1953's The Wild One, where he starred as an iconic gang leader.

Among his most famous roles is that of mafia leader Don Corleone in the 1972 classic The Godfather.

Brando, who recently turned 80, was last seen on screen in the 2001 crime drama The Score.
