`2006 may have looked like an overly optimistic accession deadline five years ago, but today it seems very realistic,` Venceslas de Lobkowitz, head of the Information Department at European Commission's Enlargement Directorate General said. He delivered a lecture on "EU Enlargement and the Role of the European Commission" at the American University in Bulgaria. In his lecture, de Lobkowitz noted that the enlargement project is one of the most important for the union in the past 10 years and that this process has presented the EU with one of the biggest challenges since the inception of the organization in 1958. de Lobkowitz emphasized that one of the important tasks at the moment is educating the public on the advantages of EU enlargement which places everyone involved in a win-win situation.
