Bulgaria's Rightist UDF Chooses Leader on Feb 21-22

Members of Bulgaria's largest right-wing political formation Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) will gather on a two-day national conference starting February 21, the party's National Council decided on Tuesday.

The forum is aimed at electing a party leader, after calls for the resignation of Nadezhda Mihaylova who holds the post at present. Those UDF members who oppose her continuing leadership point out Mihaylova's failure to win the past Sofia mayor poll as their main motive.

They even threatened to sue her for allegedly forging documents with which the UDF has obtained legal registration. Mihaylova dismissed the allegations and announced her decision to run for a next term as UDF leader.

Former holder of the post and ex-prime minister Ivan Kostov, however, called for Mihaylova to step down and not run for another mandate.
