Some 10.5% of Bulgaria's people aged 15 - 74 browse the Internet, a survey of the National Statistical Institute conducted in the summer of 2003, showed.
If compared to the same figure in European Union (EU) member nations, Bulgaria lags far behind, data shows.
According to results of the survey, some 151,000 Bulgarian households are connected to the Internet, most of them (95%) living in larger urban areas. Most of the users use dial-up connection - about 79%.
The number of people who possess mobile phones proved to be fast increasing over the last few years. Households where mobile phones are available amount to 908,000 in 2003, which means their number is three times over than in 2001. Laptops and palmtops, however, still remain comparatively unpopular, the Institute's inquiry showed.
