Bulgarian Customs Officers "Involved in Assaults against Colleague"

Officers at Bulgaria's customs services are involved in the assaults against their colleague Natalia Daskalova, local radio Info reported Monday, quoting police sources. Daskalova, chief of the customs unit at Sofia suburb Suhodol, was attacked twice within a week by three men.

The radio claims that Sofia policemen were checking on an employee of the customs investigation at the Sofia Airport and a former chief of the same customs. It also says that the two suspected customs officers were in close contacts to underworld bosses and exerted pressure over Daskalova as she declined to allow illegal exports.

The attack aimed to scare Daskalova so that she would allow the imports of illegal goods, Info radio asserts. It also quotes some colleagues of Daskalova who claimed that over the last six months she was subjected to high pressure.

Late on Saturday Bulgaria's police arrested two of the three alleged assaulters of the customs officer. The third attacker was arrested on the day of the beating. The detainees are also suspected for the first attack on a customs officer last week - the bomb planted in the car of Rumen Teoharov - a colleague of Daskalova's.
