Proofs of Corruption May Trigger Sofia Mayor Resignation

Politics | November 10, 2003, Monday // 00:00

I am ready to submit my resignation should cases of corruption in Sofia municipality be disclosed, Stefan Sofianski, the newly re-elected Sofia mayor, said Monday for national private bTV channel. He also urged for more checks on the municipality's work.

A day earlier in a common statement, the leaders of four rightist parties called on the freshly re-elected Sofia mayor and his party's councillors to join in working out and signing an agreement for a new approach to the capital city's governance. The front figures of UDF, the Democratic Party, the Agrarian Party and the conservative movement Gergyovden urged a commitment on paper to the principles of transparency.

Sofianski admitted the working group was being hampered by some problems, with two separate meeting beings held with representatives of the Agrarian Party and the UDF.

He confirmed that coalition-nominated deputy mayors will be welcomed into his administration given that the right-wing Union of Democratic Forces is a full member of the coalition, represented by 23 municipal councillors.
