Future special services advisor in the political Cabinet of Bulgaria's prime minister Gen Brigo Asparuhov expects NATO member countries to exert pressure against his appointment, it emerged on Thursday.
Asparuhov's statement came a week after the decision of the prime minister to appoint him as special services liaison - a move widely regarded as surprising and risky, which was slammed by President Parvanov and even "stunned" Bruce Jackson, President of the US Committee on NATO Enlargement.
Talking to local private national TV channel bTV NATO-disliked intelligence veteran Gen Brigo Asparuhov proposed that the intelligence services be under the control of the executive power and not the presidency.
The intelligence services must be subject to those who assign the tasks and that is the executive power, Asparuhov said.
I would be glad to express my opinion should I be approached to do that when laws are being drawn out by the prime minister or a working group. There is no conflict in that, he underlined.
