Bulgaria might become the "first and basic" station for export of Iraqi oil into Europe according to an official of the US-appointed interim administration in Baghdad.

Mohammed Amin Ahmed, a former ambassador to Bulgaria from 1995 to 1999 and the current head of the Europe Department of Iraq's Foreign Ministry, is paying a visit to Sofia to see if the country can be made a transit base for selling Iraqi oil to European states.

"Iraq disposes of the biggest oil reserves and this is something that has to be exported. Bulgaria might become the basic and the first station to export Iraqi oil into Europe," Ahmed said in Sofia.

He held a meeting with Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Solomon Passy and is scheduled to discuss with Energy Minister Milko Kovachev possible oil projects.
