BGN 500 Fine for Swearing at Bulgarian Stadiums

Politics | July 31, 2003, Thursday // 00:00

The Bulgarian Parliament passed Thursday a bill against sports hooliganism that sets a fine of BGN 200-500 for people who swear at stadiums. Infringers may also be detained for up to fifteen days according to the new law. Liquor-sellers nabbed in the areas around stadiums while a sports event is taking place will have to pay a fine of up to BGN 10,000. Outbursts of football hooliganism are not unusual in Bulgaria - especially when the two main soccer rivals Levski and CSKA meet. Quarrels and even fights between supporters of the two teams often interrupt those matches.
