Right-Wing Opposition to Appoint New Mayor Candidate by Sept 5

Politics | July 22, 2003, Tuesday // 00:00

Bulgaria's Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) will appoint new candidate for the post of Sofia mayor by September 5, the party's National Council decided at its meeting Tuesday.

The Council rejected the proposal of UDF leader Nadezhda Mihaylova to convene an extraordinary conference of the party. Earlier in July Mihaylova called for the conference after she withdrew support for Plamen Oresharski who was to run for the Sofia mayor post on the ticket of the rightist party.

UDF Deputy Chairman Emanuil Yordanov said Monday that ruling principles set at the last conference are still working and thus there is no need to bid a new one.

I am ready to accept possible refusal, Mihaylova said earlier on Tuesday.
