Bulgaria: Behind the Photo: How Posture and Presence Reveal European Weakness

There are many significant diplomatic details in this photo that make it fascinating. Far more than the long table at which Putin welcomed Macron years ago.

Not a single leader from a country bordering Ukraine is present, but that is hardly the point.

For Mark Rutte, this meeting could have been an email, which is likely why he sat so that Trump couldn’t see him from Lincoln’s head.

Ursula… from the EU, if anyone is going to attend, it’s either her or no one. She has never truly grasped the implications of the position she is taking, which is why she isn’t directly opposite Trump. If she had gone to support Zelensky, she would have had to sit next to him, but she didn’t. These small moments matter immensely when constantly signaling unwavering support.

Meloni clearly dislikes having her holiday interrupted. Merz looks uncertain about the future and unsure how to position himself. Macron seems to realize that his phone call with Putin a month and a half ago was largely in vain. Starmer isn’t visible and why would he be, when Europe’s islanders barely register anymore? Even if he were there, he would be hidden behind Benjamin Franklin’s head.

Everyone in the back is present not to contribute anything substantive but to signal hierarchy. They show that more comfortable seats exist - seats the current guests will not occupy, while lower-level officials will. This is a subtle form of humiliation. Normally, the important people sit on sofas, while translators, journalists, and other third-tier participants sit on chairs or stand. The standing figures merely suggest that guests need not linger, and the open door reinforces the same. The only translator who matters is next to Zelensky.

In fact, the only attendees who truly make sense at this meeting are Zelensky and Stubb, with the Finn taking notes as if he will ever read them. Zelensky is slowly regaining composure in his suit, though it is too early for the tie and white shirt - he still believes Ukraine can achieve more on the battlefield, though not as much as two years ago when his uniform looked half-ready.

The meeting in Washington was less a discussion than a lecture: the American president outlining rough plans for changes that will happen in the coming years, regardless of whether he remains president. The reality is that promises made by the Biden administration will not materialize.

European leaders lack the mechanisms to project influence independently on their continent. They cannot impose meaningful tariffs in response to Trump’s moves, and their reliance on the US leaves them effectively powerless, a humiliating spectacle. These leaders are unsure why they lead, unsure of their authority, and acutely aware that they cannot solve major issues alone. They are executors, cognizant of their limitations, which is why they are accepted in this way. Our own government representatives from Bulgaria look much the same in Brussels.

Trump’s personality is irrelevant here. In fact, it is preferable, because his approach reveals how European leaders treat real power. He has been the ideal US president since 2016 to give Europe a chance at relative autonomy, yet courage, ambition, and proper advice are lacking. The result is clear: Europe fails to build a long-term vision to project influence.

The truly important meeting was in Alaska - a campaign promise fulfilled. Trump has long been denied recognition as “American president” by mainstream liberal media; he is called simply Trump. A subtle distinction, but telling. Trump is not a hologram; he is a leader capable of projecting power globally, unlike a united Europe. Crucially, Putin went to Alaska to meet the de facto head of NATO, not Trump per se. Even if Rutte had requested a meeting, Putin would not have attended - at most, he would meet Lavrov, or possibly Erdogan or another NATO figure capable of projecting a personal stance without violating alliance norms. These subtleties are high-level diplomacy that Bulgaria is far from grasping or capable of leading.
